DOUGONG BRACKETING SYSTEM IN CHINA



  • traditional Chinese architecture
  • system of bracket 
  • one of structural member located between the top of a column and a cross beam
  • each is formed of a double bow-shaped arm which supports a block of wood (dou) on each side
  • to support the roof
  •  the dougong structure can be found only in the most magnificent buildings such as palace and temple halls due to hierarchical restrictions in feudal society
  • the number of layers of these bracket structures depended on the importance of the building
  • the dougong structure is highly resistant to earthquake
  • dougong helped so many ancient buildings to stand intact for hundreds years

These brackets arranged like baskets of flowers and set under the overhanging eaves



dougong is measured in "pile"
